Stormwater is rainwater and melted snow that runs off streets, lawns, and other sites. In developed areas, like Cleveland, impervious surfaces such as pavements and roofs prevent precipitation from naturally absorbing into the ground to be filtered. Instead, it runs into storm drains, sewer systems, and drainage ditches. The stormwater management problems cross community boundaries and borders. Stormwater causes sewer overflows, floods homes and streets, exacerbates the erosion of roads and streambanks and increases surface pollution into Lake Erie and local waterways.
