The 2015 FilmForums Series in partnership with the Cleveland International Film Festival, Part 1

The 2015 FilmForums Series in partnership with the Cleveland International Film Festival, Part 1

The most exciting week of the year in the CLE is nearly upon us! The Cleveland International Film Festival kicks off on Wednesday, March 18th. The City Club is once again partnering with CIFF on FilmForums, a set of panel discussions that will take place immediately after 12 different screenings at the festival. Our first four FilmForums are:

Thursday, March 19th @ 6:00 pm - Racing to Zero

What does it take to be truly sustainable? Our first FilmForum will seek to answer that question after a screening of Racing to Zero, which is a quick-moving, upbeat documentary presenting new solutions to the global problem of waste. Moderated by Mark Simpson from IdeaStream, the panel will include the director and producer of the film as well as Jenita McGowan (Chief of Sustainability for the City of Cleveland) and Erica Robinson (Neighborhood Project Manager at Famicos Foundation). Join the discussion and help us plan to make Cleveland a more sustainable city!

Friday, March 20th @ 4:10 pm - Creeping Garden

Can an ancient life form be the secret to unlocking the potential of future technologies? The Creeping Garden is a feature length creative documentary exploring the work of fringe scientists, mycologists and artists, and their relationship with the extraordinary plasmodial slime mould. Joining moderator Annie Glausser from IdeaStream and the director of the film are Markus Vogl from the University of Akron’s Myers School of Art and David Jurca from the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative.

*Friday, March 20th @ 7:00 pm - Finding the Gold Within*

What happens when the African tradition of storytelling is placed at the heart of a mentoring program? Follow six men from Akron through their first year of college as the discover what it means to be young, Black, male, and “other.” The director of the film as well as the six film subjects will be headlining the discussion moderated by Jim Crutchfield, a trustee of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

*This FilmForum will take place at the Akron-Summit County Public Library*

Saturday, March 21st @ 11:30 am - Limited Partnership

Join us as we discuss some of the love stories that have driven history. In 1975, thanks to a courageous county clerk in Boulder, CO, Richard Adams and Tony Sullivan were one of the first same-sex couples in the world to be legally married. What follows is an epic saga of one couple whose story parallels the history of the LGBT movement in the U.S. The filmmaker will be joined by two Cleveland-area same sex couples who will talk about their own histories against the backdrop of Richard and Tony’s. The panel will be moderated by David C. Barnett from IdeaStream.

Check back in tomorrow and Friday for the rest of the 2015 FilmForum series! We hope to see you there.
