36 hours of awesome (if you're a political junkie)

36 hours of awesome (if you're a political junkie)

The first debate of the 2016 election cycle is almost upon us. As of the writing of this post, we don't yet know which 10 of the dozens of GOP hopefuls will make the cut. (We're pretty sure that Mark Everson, pictured above, won't make the cut, but he was the first GOP hopeful to address the City Club this year.) What we do know is that the City Club will be host to three different events over two days that amount to an all-you-can-eat buffet for the political junkie in all of us.

The first event is the morning of August 6th. The Campaign to Fix the Debt is coming in for a breakfast forum to make their pitch on why the national debt should be the most pressing issue in the race for the White House. Cleveland corporate leader Sandy Cutler of Eaton will be on the panel (he's on Fix The Debt's CEO Fiscal Leadership Council) along with Maya MacGuineas, President of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. That panel may grow, and we're working to recruit the perfect moderator. (Doors open at 8 a.m. Program starts at 8:30.)

On the evening of 8/6, we're joining forces with the Cleveland Foundation, the Cleveland Young Professional Senate and ideastream to present a debate watch party (with free admission!). We've got a somewhat extended program that evening, starting with networking, roundtable conversations on the issues most important to you, a panel conversation and Q&A with local leading political analysts (which will be broadcast live, by the way), and then a presentation of the debate.

The following day, Friday, August 7th, the City Club hosts Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, chair of the Democratic National Committee for a kind of rebuttal to the GOP debate, a presentation of what the Democrats believe is at stake in the 2016 general election.

Deep dives on the issues, examination of candidates, robust presentation of ideas and perspectives from all sides--pure City Club of Cleveland. We hope you can be there for some of it, maybe all of it
