The 2016 FilmForum Series in Partnership with the Cleveland International Film Festival, Part 1

The 2016 FilmForum Series in Partnership with the Cleveland International Film Festival, Part 1

#CIFF40 is nearly upon us, and the City Club is once again happy to be partnering with the Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF) to present 10 FilmForums – a screening followed by a panel discussion – between March 30 to April 10. Find trailers and descriptions for the first five below. Also, be sure to use the special code CITYCLUB to get $2 off anything when you attend, our treat.

Friday, April 1 @ 4:45 p.m. – Resilience

The core of Resilience is the message “the child may not remember, but the body remembers.” This film addresses the first study ever conducted by Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) that connected childhood trauma with many of today’s largest public health risks: alcohol, drug abuse, depression, STDs and their transmission, smoking, and attempted suicide. Interviews with doctors, social workers and educators show the incredible work done being to aid these traumatized children.

Saturday, April 2 @11:15 a.m. – Unseen

Unseen tells the disturbing story of the 2009 arrest and trial of Anthony Sowell: kidnapper, rapist and murderer of 11 women from the Mount Pleasant Neighborhood of Cleveland. With interviews from surviving victims, Unseen depicts the chilling invisibility of women on the margins of society and raises troubling questions about why these killings went unnoticed for so long.

Sunday, April 3 @ 11:15 a.m. – Kings, Queens & In-Betweens

Welcome to Columbus, Ohio: Drag Capital of the Midwest. This documentary follows pioneers who are redefining, redrawing and crossing the borders of gender while fighting ignorance and prejudice within and without the LGBTQ community. Forget space; gender is the new frontier.

Sunday, April 3 @ 4:30 p.m. – Indian Point

Global energy demand is steadily increasing, and as we attempt to meet it with supply, what part should nuclear power play? Following the disasters in Chernobyl and Fukushima, Indian Point documents activists calls for the shutdown of a nuclear power plant in Buchanan, New York in an eye-opening discussion of our energy future.

Monday, April 4 @ 4:00 p.m. – The Bad Kids

An observational documentary set in the impoverished Mojave Desert community, The Bad Kids chronicles the mission of Black Rock Continuation High School principal Vonda Viland to realize the potential of three students deemed a lost cause at this alternative school. When all else fails, The Bad Kids shows that a little love can go a long way in realizing each individual’s potential.
