Ohio 2018: Meet the Democratic Candidates for Governor

There are six gubernatorial candidates on the Democratic primary ballot including Richard Cordray, Dennis Kucinich, Bill O’Neill and Joseph Schiavoni. Betty Sutton, a former Ohio state representative, is no longer running for governor of Ohio. She is now running for lieutenant governor with Cordray’s campaign. The official deadline to file with the state of Ohio to run was February 8,primaryvoting day is May 8 and general election day is November 6.

Cordray was elected as state treasurer in 2006 and attorney general in 2008. He is also the former Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Director.

Kucinich’s political career began in 1969 when he was elected to Cleveland City Council. He went on to serve as Clerk of Courts in 1975, Mayor in 1977, Ohio Senator in 1995 and a state representative from 1997 to 2013. His running mate is Tara Samples, Akron City Council Woman.

O’Niellisa former justice on the Ohio Supreme Court, announcing he would be stepping down from that post in 2017. He also served as a judge in the Ohio Eleventh District Court of Appeals from 1997to2007,andwas Ohio Assistant Attorney General from 1984 to 1996. His running mate is Chantelle Lewis, a former East Cleveland City Council member.

Schiavoni is a member of the Ohio State Senate, a post he’s served since 2009, and served as Senate minority leader from 2014 to 2017. His running mate is Stephanie Dodd, a member of the Ohio State Board of Education representing District 9 elected in 2012.
