For the Love of Cleveland Returns In the Square this Summer

For the Love of Cleveland Returns In the Square this Summer

If you’re a City Club member, frequent guest, or just a follower of our social media accounts, you’ll hear us speak often of #HaveGongWillTravel. We’ve learned that the City Club is a spirit, not a space, and we have discovered many City Club “homes” outside of our building at the intersection of Euclid Avenue and East 9thStreet.

One of our favorite places to call home is Public Square. In 2016, after the unveiling of the new Public Square, The New York Times described it as being “very recently transformed into a more inviting public space – as if the city of Cleveland were inviting the country and saying simply: Discuss.”

It seemed appropriate then for us – with a mission is to create conversations of consequence to help democracy thrive – to convene a series of forums in the Square. Last year, we debuted the For the Love of Cleveland series, presented by the Cleveland Foundation, on the complex issues facing Cleveland’s neighborhoods.

We’re pleased to announce For the Love of Cleveland is back in 2018. Today at noon, we’ll launch the series with a special forum featuring ioby Co-Founder and Executive Director Erin Barnes. Then, for four Tuesdays in June, we’ll be discussing placemaking: the places we use, the impact they have on our lives, and the people who work to build them.

Effective placemaking can bring people together, create a more equitable society, and foster economic development. And yet the process for creating and keeping a sense of place remains a challenge for most urban centers, including Cleveland. Why? How can we create places that are equitable and reflect our diverse community? And how can residents take action in their own neighborhoods?

Sidewalks and stories. Parks and people. Architecture and authenticity. For four Tuesdays, under the guidance of ideastream® Senior Host/Producer Rick Jackson, we’ll explore 222 years of built environment and meet the people raising their voices to impact change for the benefit of their community. The conversations are free. Food trucks and the Cleveland Water Buggy will be out. Arrive early, grab lunch, meet some new people, and be part of the conversation.

Place matters. Join us.
