Statement Regarding Debates and Ohio's 14th Congressional District
At the beginning of this election season, we recognized that with our existing resources, we would have to prioritize our work regarding political debates. We decided to focus on working with major media organizations, universities and civic organizations to create the Ohio Debate Commission, as well as presenting debates in statewide races with the collaboration of the Press Club of Akron and the University of Akron’s Bliss Institute of Applied Politics. In addition to that, we are hosting a debate in the County Executive race. We added the 16th congressional district because it is an open seat, and both campaigns had publicly stated their interest in debating.
While we won’t be putting on a debate in the 14th congressional district, we would be supportive of any organization that might seek to do so.
Lastly, we will share your feedback with our debate committee and board as we think ahead to future election cycles and how we manage the changing nature of debates.
