The 2015 FilmForums Series in partnership with the Cleveland International Film Festival, Part 2
We’re partnering with the Cleveland International Film Festival once again to present 2015’s FilmForum series. Each panel should be about an hour long, following the conclusion of the screening. Yesterday, we listed the first four panels, and today is part 2 of our FilmForum schedule!
Saturday, March 21st @ 6:15 pm - Most Likely to Succeed (run time: 86 min.)
If we were to invent public education today, what would it look like? This film deems the source of the problem not in the economy but in our educational system, which was developed at the dawn of the Industrial Age to train obedient workers and has changed little since, despite radical changes in the marketplace wrought by technology and the outsourcing of labor. Join our very own Dan Moulthrop as he moderates an elite panel consisting of Melissa Cropper from the Ohio Federation of Teachers, Arin Miller-Tate of Bard High School Early College, Anne Mullin from the George Gund Foundation, and Stephanie Rogan, an education consultant who worked on the film. If you are a teacher, a student, a parent, or are in any way involved with education, this FilmForum is definitely for you!
Sunday March 22nd @ 6:45 pm - Homestretch (run time: 89 min.)
As the number of homeless teens continues to rise, how do we rise to meet their needs? The film spotlights several programs and selfless teachers who have dedicated their lives to ensuring homeless students are taken care of, and they excel in their studies. It follows several youths as they try to overcome their circumstances, with the eventual goal of attending college. Maxie Jackson of IdeaStream will be moderating the FilmForum, which will include the director and one of the students featured in the film. In addition, we will be joined by Tasha Jones, a local teenager who has dealt with homelessness, and by Marcia Zashin from Project ACT, which is a program for homeless teens run through the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.
Monday, March 23rd @ 6:20 pm - The Hand that Feeds (run time: 88 min.)
Who pays the cost of low prices in our economy? This film brings us to the front lines of the minimum wage debate as about a dozen undocumented employees of a popular deli in NYC fight for basic workers’ rights, including fair scheduling, overtime pay, and competent wages. Our moderator will be Andrew Samtoy from IdeaStream, and the panel will include the director of the film. We will also hear from Colleen Cotter from the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland, Veronica Dahlberg from HOLA Ohio, and Amy Hanauer of Policy Matters Ohio.
Tuesday, March 24th @ 4:30 pm - Out in the Night (run time: 75 min.)
What are the consequences of self-defense? This film seeks to answer that question through the lens of a group of black women who seek to defend themselves against an aggressor but instead find themselves embroiled in legal issues accusing them of violence. Rick Jackson from IdeaStream will moderate the panel, and we will feature the director of this powerful film alongside Deidre McPherson of Sistah Sinema and Alex Leslie from the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center.
