Lorin Maazel became the Orchestra's fifth Musical Director in 1972. After having conducted nearly 100 of the Orchestra's concerts each year since, he is preparing to leave Cleveland for Vienna.
Maazel speaks about the influence of music and music-makers in contemporary society. He expands upon his idea that classical music is not elitist or intellectual, but rather essential for a functioning society, citing classical music's influence upon the economy, culture, and music education.
