Senator Mathias, a liberal Republican often called “the conscience of the Senate," discusses the importance of defending civil liberties and retaining of the integrity of the Constitution.
Mathias spent the first half of his political career fighting for civil rights. He played a major role in drafting the 1964 Civil Rights Act as a subordinate to Republican leaders who provided the margin of victory in the House.
A native of Frederick, Maryland, Mathias attended Haverford College and recieved his law degree from the University of Maryland.
