Yemen is unique. It is one of the oldest societies in the world and the poorest Arab country. Popular commentary often ignores Yemen as peripheral to the Middle East’s dominate themes, but this misses much. Propelled by the Arab uprisings in 2011, Yemeni society peacefully mobilized protests and forced its long ruling president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, to step down. Today, Yemen finds itself mired in a violent contest between northern rebel groups and Saudi and Emirati forces. For Yemeni society, the repercussions have been deadly.

Join us, the Cleveland Council on World Affairs, IPM, and the Northeast Ohio Consortium for Middle Eastern Studies (NOCMES) for a discussion on the unfolding crisis in Yemen and its complex historical background.
