Should Conservatives Embrace Clean Energy?

We often forget that Republican presidents are responsible for some of the most ground-breaking environmental legislation, including establishing the Environmental Protection Agency and signing into law the Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act. Today, Republican voters still have a strong desire to conserve natural resources and preserve natural places for future generations and strongly favor a cleaner, healthier environment.

Yet despite an increase in the number of Republican lawmakers and their constituents who support action to support clean energy, we are a long way from a comprehensive energy policy that will ensure abundant, clean, and secure energy while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. There is no question that we need to reinvent how we generate, transport, and use electric power in the 21st century, and not just as a response to climate change.
