According to the Council of State Governments’ Justice Center, one of every 201 U.S. residents was held at a federal or state corrections facility at the end of 2010 and more than 95 percent of these individuals will return home. Criminal records pose a major barrier for successfully reintegrating into the community, from limiting housing choice to barring job options. These barriers have major consequences for the quality of life of returning citizens. In Cleveland, a number of organizations and institutions are seeking to help returning citizens overcome the challenges of reentry by connecting them to jobs, stable housing, and other critical services.
Join us for our fourth Dinner + Dialogue event, a conversation with Case Western Reserve University Professor of Sociology Timothy Black, Ph.D. and Damian Calvert, a returning citizen and advocate for reentry. In 2015, Dr. Black and Mr. Calvert completed an ethnographic study of a fatherhood program, wherein they held group interviews and collected individual life stories of returning citizens in Cleveland. Together, they will share information gathered from their research and answer questions on the experiences of those reentering in Cleveland.
