Global climate change is not just an emerging threat to the environment and public health, it is a current threat to both. Climate change stresses natural ecosystems, undermines our health and wellbeing by contaminating the air we breathe, the water we drink, and eroding the soil that sustains our food supply.
Globally, a lack of environmental security means billions of people do not have access to safe water, clean air, adequate food, and proper healthcare. The World Health Organization estimates that between 2030 and 2050, climate change is expected to cause approximately 250,000 additional deaths per year due to heat stress, diarrhea, infectious diseases, childhood undernutrition; resulting in billions of dollars more in health care costs.
We need to better understand our impact and relationship to the natural environment, the direct costs associated with it, and learn how we can adapt to or alter these imminent threats. Join the City Club of the Mahoning Valley for its second Views & Brews event, a free discussion on global climate change, the environment, and public health.
