"The US lacks stability over democratic rule in Africa - which means they keep a lot of dictators in power." – Tamba Nlandu, Ph.D.

Much of the world is marred by conflict and crises of leadership and Africa is no exception. After a contentious and violent election process that left dozens dead - and included the Supreme Court invalidating the initial election results - Uhuru Kenyatta was re-elected President of Kenya. In Zimbabwe, President Robert Mugabe, who recently was removed as a World Health Organization (WHO) goodwill ambassador for his human rights abuses, plans to run for re-election in 2018.

This is all occurring as ISIS and Al-Qaeda move out of Syria and Iraq and into Africa. A massive bomb explosion in the capital of Somalia - along with terrorist attacks in Egypt and Niger, which included the deaths of four American soldiers - led the U.S. military to conduct its first airstrikes against ISIS in an African country.

Join us, the Cleveland Council on World Affairs, Global Cleveland, International Partners in Mission, and the Northeast Ohio Consortium for Middle Eastern Studies (NOCMES) for a free discussion with Tamba Nlandu, Ph.D., Associate Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Philosophy at John Carroll University, and Jen Ziemke, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Political Science at John Carroll University, on the geopolitical issues facing Africa and their impact on the United States moderated by Kent State University Professor of Political Science Mark K. Cassell.
