"The road to startup community growth is measured in years - there isn't a plan or a recipe. Every community is different." – Chris Heivly

When it comes to startups, Cleveland has been playing catch up since the mid-1990s. It wasn't always that way. A hundred years ago, Cleveland was an entrepreneurial hot spot, the leader in innovation, patents, startups, and wealth creation. In the last few years, a group of entrepreneurs and startup founders have been convening a series of community advocacy events called TechniCLE Speaking, out of which grew an awareness of the need for improving and expanding our support for startups here in Cleveland.

A key outcome was the launch of a small grassroots group of entrepreneurs envisioning a new Cleveland startup renaissance. As a first step, the past September, they engaged Techstars, the world’s leading startup experts and the catalyst behind successful startup communities such as Boulder, Colorado and Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina, to perform an evaluation of our community using their expertise and to provide a tailored roadmap for re-igniting and strengthening Cleveland’s startup community. Techstars' Chris Heivly toured local startup venues, attended several startup events, and performed hundreds of hours of in-person in-depth interviews. This initial assessment is the beginning of the what could become a new, generational transformation of Cleveland.

Please join us for the first step towards Cleveland’s next hundred years, a free public conversation on this important evaluation. Cocktail reception to follow.
