Last month, ideastream premiered Inside the Bricks: Woodhill Homes, a podcast/radio series that features personal stories from residents of Woodhill Homes on the eve of the neighborhood’s planned redevelopment. Woodhill Homes, an 80-year-old public housing development on Cleveland's East Side, is one of the oldest public housing developments in Cleveland and the nation. In 2018, the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority and the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development began a two-year, $350,000 effort to reimagine Woodhill Homes and the neighborhood around it.
In the six episodes, Inside the Bricks features interviews with residents in their apartments, on their sidewalks, and in their community center to ask what should change and what shouldn't. Underlying all of this are even bigger questions: How can officials avoid Cleveland's past pattern of uprooting Black neighborhoods in the name of progress? How do we make sure that what happens at Woodhill respects the viewpoints and contributions of current residents? What is the role of public housing in 2020? Can this plan help us right some of our past wrongs in terms of housing segregation and redlining?
Join us to reflect on the personal stories presented in the series and discuss what’s to come for Woodhill’s future.
The livestream will be available beginning at 12 p.m. Have questions? Tweet them at @TheCityClub or send a text to 330.541.5794.
