From superstorms on Mars powerful enough to strand an astronaut; to Kyber Crystals that power lightsabers; or Warp Drive travel to where no man has gone before… For generations, Sci-Fi novels, film, and television have always pushed the boundaries between scientific fact, and fantastical interpretations of what could be possible for humankind.
But often, authors and filmmakers are not astrophysicists or scientists! Who tells them what is actually scientifically accurate? And when should we opt for scientific accuracy over artistic liberty?
Dr. Erin Macdonald has a Ph.D. in Astrophysics and works with writers and producers in Hollywood to bring scientific accuracy to their productions. Since 2019, "Dr Erin" has been the science advisor for the entire Star Trek franchise. She is also the founder and owner of Spacetime Productions, a film company dedicated to lifting and sharing marginalized talent and stories.
Throughout the weekend ahead of the Eclipse on Monday, April 8th, the City Club will partner with the Great Lakes Science Center during their FREE three-day celebration at the North Coast Harbor. Join us as we hear from Dr. Erin Macdonald about her work in Star Trek and the interconnectivity of science and pop culture.
