School-to-Prison Pipeline: How Discipline Shapes Students' Futures

This is a youth-led forum, powered by student voices.

A disciplinary decision at school can affect far more than what happens in a classroom. For some young people, repeated suspensions, exclusion from school, community violence, and contact with the juvenile justice system can become interconnected experiences that shape their opportunities long after an incident occurs.

At this student-led forum, we will examine the school-to-prison pipeline and how school discipline practices, community conditions, juvenile justice, and systemic barriers can influence a student's future. Panelists will also explore prevention and intervention strategies and consider how schools and communities can promote accountability and safety while helping young people remain connected to opportunities for growth.
