Member Spotlight: Bob Kirschner

Robert P. Kirschner
Brecksville, OH

Tell us about yourself!
I’m a proud Dad of four great kids and am lucky to be married to an amazing wife! We love exploring Cuyahoga Valley National Park, cheering on the Indians, and shopping for local food at Howe Meadow on Saturday mornings. I am an enthusiastic home cook and you can follow along on my Instagram account (@rpkirschner1).

How long have you been a member of the City Club?
Not as longtime a member as I would like! I’ve been attending City Club Forums for 10+ years, and am in my 4th year as a member.

Tell us about a recent forum that you enjoyed:
I attended the Susan Goldberg forum and found it fascinating to learn how an iconic brand like National Geographic has transformed itself. Susan, Editor In Chief of National Geographic Magazine, described how they have journeyed from “reverence to relevance” and have used social media as a catalyst for this transition. It was particularly interesting to hear from the head of the venerable magazine how they chose to address important conversations about race, gender, and environmental issues.

Why you are a member of the City Club?
Finding a space and place to be able to have civic, civil conversations about difficult and relevant issues is a rarity today. The City Club provides this opportunity and is a shining example of an organization that is true to its mission as it creates conversations of consequence that help democracy thrive. Professionally, I enjoy the opportunity to connect with my peers, make new connections across town, and help build a spirit of civic engagement.

What’s your favorite ‘hidden gem’ in Greater Cleveland?
Cuyahoga Valley National Park! We have 33,000 acres of beautiful, protected nature at our doorstep. Ledges and Blue Hen Falls are two favorite spots to hike and explore.

For someone attending a City Club forum for the first time, what advice would you share with them?
Arrive early, introduce yourself to strangers, and don’t be shy to sit at a table where you don’t know anyone.
